THE
NAME: My Name is Jean Hairston. I started Blacice
Labradors in
1990. I bred my first litter in 1994. I had been around dogs
for years. My brother
had labs. The origin
of the name came as my mother, sister Laura and I were on
our way up to Baltimore to visit my other sister Julia at John
Hopkins
University. We were talking about the road condition and
talking
about black ice on the road. Since I had all blacks
at the time and their names included gemstones, I decided
to that was a great
name for my kennels. I chose to spell it different so it
wouldn't take up so many spaces on the AKC forms.

THE
KENNEL: I
moved to my present home and grounds in Hartselle, AL in 1996.
I needed more room
for the dogs and there wasn't a cap on the number of dogs you
could own and house here. I built for 5 dogs and puppy facilities.
The
dogs have their own play area that is fenced. I show the dogs
in conformation, obedience, and have started working
on hunting with
them. I did use to do therapy work with them. I temper test
all my puppies and choose the best one for the buyers that
I have.
My puppies have gone to both ends of the country. I have several
families that have 2 dogs from different breedings. My lines
have the more laid back personalities than others. I feel that
the labs
should be able to be a family pet, hunting buddy and do what
the they were breed to do. I don't breed every year. All my
breeding stock is temper tested, had their hips OFA, eyes
cerf yearly.
I
don't breed to just sell puppies. I usually breed to keep something
for myself! When I have a litter, they go to their new homes
well socialized, crate trained, and have started working on
leash training.
